Waiaroha | 2D Visual Narratives
Waiaroha Heretaunga Water Discovery Centre. Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga.
Visual Narrative & Illustration
As the illustrator on this project I worked with an amazing team of strategists, designers, writers and animators, led by Stitchbird Studio to bring the story of Heretaunga’s water to life in an immersive purpose-built visitor education centre. Engaging all the senses with the mission to get the community to understand and care for their water.
THE JOURNEY OF WATER
Character Driven Interpretive Signage
Interpretive panels tell the story of the journey of water. In the visual narrative our visitors follow the story of an aunt and her nephew as they walk from mountains to sea. Building empathy through character driven visual narrative and meeting local wildlife along the way.
On the right hand panel tactile interactive play compliments and deepens the messages of the visual narrative beside it.
WHARE AKO
The pathway leads to the Whare Ako a space for learning, play and reflection. The glass windows of the whare itself are wrapped in the illustrated story of the whakapapa of water
WHARE AKO | INSIDE
Inside the Whare Ako science education is delivered in bite sized pieces that build on on one another as the journey unfolds. Looking at the water in the natural and built environments, including the ways we use water. Employing humour and visual devices to keep the audience engaged.
CHOOSE A CHALLENGE
Infographics & Spot Illustrations
Visitors are encouraged to act once they leave the centre. Simple engaging facts are personified to make an emotional connection, challenges that are easy to implement at home are visualised and made memorable through character and humour.
